For afghans, my personal favorite is the circular needle. Many knitters first become interested in the craft so that they can create blankets for their friends and family. Other simple textures can be made with nothing but knit and purl stitches, including garter stitch, ribbing, and moss and seed stitches. Making a baby blanket yourself or having someone knit one for you is the best way to show your love.
